The new product was announced by Justin Spelhaug, Vice President of Tech for Social Impact, Microsoft Philanthropies, in a blog post. Microsoft points out that nonprofits are at particular risk from cyberattacks. Because of the limited financial resources, nonprofits do not have the means to thwart threats. Spelhaug adds this means bad actors will often target nonprofits: “While this impacts all sectors and organizations, nonprofits are often perceived as vulnerable because they may not have adequate resources to safeguard the data they need to operate – impacting everyone from donors to program participants to volunteers.” The blog suggests cybercriminals target nonprofit and government systems around every 39 seconds, and 70 percent of targets lack the security infrastructure to fight the threats. Microsoft’s Security Program for Nonprofits claims to be the answer to this problem.

Security for Nonprofits

It provides monitoring tools, resources to train IT departments, and insights for organizations to improve their security. By collaborating with partners, Microsoft is offering free security assessments and guidance to nonprofits. The platform also includes the AccountGuard tool. AccountGuard was launched in August 2017. Available in Office 365, the service helps Microsoft Account holders running elections campaigns, in political committees, or politician staff. The tool provides more threat monitoring capabilities by regularly monitoring accounts for security breaches. “Our objective is to support 10,000 organizations in the first year, with a three-year goal of providing these services to 50,000 organizations worldwide,” Microsoft says.
